Founded by Franciscan Handmaids, an order of black nuns, in the basement of their convent, as an extension of their day nursery, St Benedict the Moor Day Nursery (on 132nd St). Outgrew this location in the mid-1930s, and relocated to the rectory of St Aloysius Church, and a school building opened there in 1941
