Established in October of 1915, the house was an independent charity until April 1920, when "incorporation papers were granted for the Katy-Ferguson-Soujourner Truth Board." The house moved into the building on June 21, 1920, and takes black homeless girls from 8 to 16 years of age that have been referred by social workers and the Childrens' Court. With twenty beds, the house only take girls temporarily until a permanent home can be found for them.
