In response to the lynching of John Wilkins, a member of the Brotherhood of the Sleeping Car Porters, two hundred people attended a mass meeting of the Brotherhood of the Sleeping Car Porters in Harlem. During the meeting, several speakers implored members to protest the lynching and argued that a thorough investigation be conducted. Two Communists spoke at the event (Ross Kelly and Solomon Harper) and were arrested by police who had been stationed at the event to prevent any disorder.
