Pedro Martinez was arrested by Patrolman Allen J. Benton for forgery. Charles S. Mays claimed that Martinez had come to rent a room in his home, and having paid for the $10 room with an $30 check, took $20 in cash from him. Claiming he would return with his clothes, he never did, and when Mays discovered that Martinez's check was invalid, he went to the police.
