An elderly night watchman, Joseph Stradick, who lived across the road from Dr. McGil's Pharmacy noticed that there were three young men standing in the entrance to the pharmacy and that the lock had been cut. Having gone down to investigate, the watchman accepted the three men's offer of free alcohol for his silence, and he proceeded to have them up to his apartment for a drink. Whilst the three men went back down to the pharmacy, the Stradick caught a cab to the nearest police station and arranged to have them promptly arrested.
