Benjamin Adair was shot to death on the sidewalk six doors down from his house. He was arguing with four men when one drew an automatic gun and fired a single shot into his abdomen. As Adair lay on the sidewalk, the four men jumped into a passing cab and got away. The patrolman William Schneitges was on duty in the area and having rushed to the scene, summoned a doctor from the Harlem Hospital, but Adair had already died.
