Hobbs went to the movies at the Apollo Theatre on West 125th Street with his 15 year old brother, Russell, around 7pm. When they came out around 12.30AM, they saw crowds at 7th 125th & 7th Ave, and went to investigate. They followed as police pushed the crowd north on 7th Ave. As they approached 128th Street, two officers in a radio car called at them to stop. Fearing that they had been mistaken for rioters, the boys ran in separate directions, Russell up 7th Ave, and Lloyd on to 128th St. McInerey then drew his gun and shot Lloyd, who died later in Harlem Hospital. The policemen claimed that they had seen the boy throw a stone through the window of an auto supply store at 2150 7th Avenue and steal goods. The goods police claimed he stole - an automobile horn and socket set -- were not produced until 10 days after he was shot. Three witnesses standing on the northwest corner of 128th St saw no looting, or Hobbs with any goods, and said that the officer never called on Hobbs to halt.
