I visited this place and found about 75 couples dancing, all colored. As I sat down a man approached me and said “Would you like to dance?” I said “Yes.” He said “We have only colored girls here.” I said “Is there any objection that I dance with one?” He said “Not at all. Only I meant to say that you were probably looking for white girls, as there is a white dance hall around the corner.” I said “Are there any white men patrons here?” He said “Yes, but very few.” I said “Can you introduce me to a girl. She must be lively.” He said “What do you mean by that?” I said “A good sport.” He said “I'll introduce you to a girl that is a good dancer. But about other things, don't ask me as I don't know and am not interested.” I told him that I better lokk around myself and pick the girl I wanted. While there I did not receive any encouragement from any girls. Improper dancing was observed, men and women shimmying and wriggling. There is very little consideration given to a white patron.
