Led by band of Monarch Lodge of the Elks, parade consisted of a hearse, followed by eight male pallbearers, honorary female pallbearers, including Ethel Waters, and 17 flower girls, women who had performed with Mills, and then 11 other automobiles. Crowds packed all vantage points, and blocked procession at 135th St and Lenox Ave, forcing a diversion along 135th St. After the funeral, the procession went up 7th Ave to Woodlawn cemetery. On the way, a plane flown by Hubert Julian dropped rose petals (some stories claim he released blackbirds)
