Charles Dancey led a friend of two women, Mrs. Elenora Faulkner and Miss Ruth White, to believe that he worked for a wealthy actress who was looking for a part time maid. The friend told the women about the position, and they subsequently invited Dancey over to Mrs. Faulkner's apartment so that Miss White could be interviewed for the position. To hear Miss White play then piano, all three later moved downstairs to Miss White's apartment. Darcey then went outside the apartment, and when he returned, two detectives burst in (who appeared to have been prearranged by Darcey), and Darcey claimed that he had paid Mrs. Faulkner $4 to have illegal relations with her, and Miss White $1.50 for the use of her apartment. Both women were arrested, but claimed complete innocence. Dancey was also arrested, almost immediately released.
