"The Thomas Negro Composers' Study Group made its third annual appearance before a large audience last Friday night in the YWCA auditorium, 144 West 138th street. Promptly at 8:40 o'clock the tom-tom was heard. Louis Burnham, who has a rich, resonant voice, acted as a narrator for the program, which fell naturally into three parts - (1) slavery, typified through traditional spirituals; (2) Deliverance (1861-63); (3) Freedom, portrayed by spirituals and modern compositions"
