"Three persons are in a serious condition in Harlem Hospital from bullet wounds as a result of two shootings which occurred on Sunday. A local police officer faces trial on a charge of felonious assault in connection with the shooting of his wife early Sunday morning... The shooting took place following a night of parties. [Defendant Sheares] and his wife, he said, left a group of friends at the Savoy Ballroom... and went home, arriving at their apartment in 310 West 150th Street, shortly after 6 a.m. While he was removing his pistol from the holster, he continued, it dropped from his hand and was accidentally discharged, the bullet striking his wife. He emphatically denied that there had been any quarrel with her just before the mishap occurred. He was suspended and placed under arrest, however, after Dr. Reilly, a police surgeon, asserted that he was intoxicated. Sheares version was corroborated by his wife."
