"Someone turned in a police riot call Tuesday night and attracted three radio cars and an emergency truck to a drug store at Lenox Avenue and 133rd Street... A minor riot then resulted... Muriel Griffith... was in the crowd attracted by the police cars. Patrolman John Jenkins of the West 135th Street station is said to have pushed Mrs. Griffith and she allegedly leaped on the patrolman's back and bit him on the right shoulder. A large crowd had gathered by then, and when Patrolmen Jenkins struck the woman over the head with his nightstick, the crowd rushed him, tore off his uniform coat and ripped his shirt. With the arrival of police reinforcements, the crowd broke up, but a number of individuals scurried to nearby rooftops and pelted the police with stones and bottles."
