"The National Baptist Convention, scheduled to meet her September 3-9, will be addressed by Gov. Herbert Lehman and Mayor Fiorella LaGuardia, who will welcome the delegates, the Rev. T. S. Harten, chairman of the committee of arrangements, announced at a mass meeting held on Thursday night of last week at Rockland Palace... In his address, Dr. Williams [president of the convention] declared that the convention must take cognizance of the need of drawing youth into the church, of the lynching terror, of the support of Negro business, and of the aiding in whatever way possible the defense of Ethiopia against Italian aggression."
