The defendant [Rakestraw] “willfully and feloniously shot [one Eliza Rice] in the heart,” at the southwest corner of West 142nd Street and Edgecomb Avenue, “causing his death before the arrival of Dr. Payne of Harlem Hospital.” Some four months later the defendant was arrested by police, and admitted to the shooting, although he stated that he had done so in retribution for Rice having previously “cut his… mother with a knife.”
