After returning home to his Morningside Avenue apartment
-
After returning home to his Morningside Avenue apartment – which his brother had locked up four hours earlier – the deponent [Daly] “found several jimmy marks on the door leading to his apartment and the moulding taking from the panel of the above mentioned door.” Two hours earlier, defendant Chapman had fallen down an air shaft at said premises and, upon being questioned by a police officer at Harlem Hospital – where the other defendants were also present – admitted to the attempted burglary. Defendant Pigues had acted as a lookout, while Chapman and White, after being unable to jimmy the door, had gone to the roof, where Chapman tied a clothes line around his body and attempted to lower himself into the apartment, but fell after the rope broke.
