After discovering that her brother, photographic assistant John Long, had not been seen for some time, Mrs. Irene Payne forced her way into his room. He was discovered dead, and his cracked skull, the newspaper in his lap, and his body slumped over have all led detectives to believe that someone deliberately hit Long from behind with some sort of blunt weapon.
