-
While playing cards in a basement apartment at 12 West 137th Street, the defendant became engaged in an altercation with one Alfred Christian “over the cards and also over Ethiopia.” The defendant then left the premises. Three-quarters of an hour later, while Christian was walking home down West 137th Street with his nephew Eggleston Hendrickson – who had not been immediately involved in the altercation, but had attempted “to calm the argument between [the defendant]... and his uncle” – the defendant jumped out from behind some parked cars and hit Hendrickson with an iron pole before – in an act he claimed was out of self defence – stabbing him in the left chest with the blade of a pocket knife, inflicting injuries resulting in his death.
