An old tenement building was completely destroyed after a fire rapidly raced through it. The fire was believed to have been started on the first floor, and its cause was subsequently being investigated by the Deputy Fire Marshalls. There was some suspicion that the fire had started on the first floor of the building after someone carelessly threw away a cigarette there, or perhaps after one of the tenants' kerosene lamps had tipped over. More than a hundred people were evacuated into the street, and about half a dozen people were treated for minor burns at Harlem Hospital.
