Upon investigating a reported robbery at the Astor Reception Hall on West 133rd Street, a police officer [Louis Fitzgerald] found one Eugene Gibbs [aged 16] holding up a crowd of around thirty patrons. According to the police officer’s testimony, Gibbs then pointed the gun at him and, in response, he fired two shots at him. The defendants [Frazier, Mills, White], who had been searching people – one armed with a revolver, another with a blackjack – fired two shots in the direction of the officer and fled via the building’s rear boiler room, but were apprehended soon after. Gibbs died some two hours later in Harlem Hospital.
