"Shouting step-ladder orators, berating Mussolini and deploring the Italian invasion on Ethiopia, whipped a mob to frenzy and gave police reserves some anxious moments Thursday night in the block bounded by Lenox Avenue, between 118th Street and 119th Streets. The demonstration was put on in front of a market, scene of a disturbance between Italians and Negroes a few hours earlier. The Ethiopian-Italian situation was also the cause of a clash at the WEst 123rd Street station, where a Negro and two patrolmen were hurt... Despite heavy police details (more than 500 officers were sent to Harlem), there were moments Thursday night when it appeared as if the crowd might get out of hand, particularly when one speaker began accusing the Fascists of atrocity plans... The rioting took place at a market at No. 170, when a crowd proceeded to boycott the place, because the owner was an Italian." A similar fray erupted in Brooklyn, where Italian and Black mobs clashed at P. S. 178.
