After visiting the deponent [Dunlap] on two prior occasions to demand money for the “protection” of his “club” – located in the basement of West 112th Street – the defendant [Steele] once again entered the premises, accompanied by three others, and ordered he pay him $5 a week. After the deponent asked “what protection?”, the men replied “to keep your place from being broken up,” before beating him about the face and body with a chair and “other weapons,” causing him to sustain “multiple contusions of the face, body, and arm; lacerations; and a fracture to the nose.”
