Mrs. Anna Plasket, a black Harlem resident, purchased some bread. Upon receiving her change, she complained to the white proprietor of the bakery, Samuel Tonieel, that he had given her a lead quarter. Mr. Tonieel said that he had done no such thing, and after entering into an argument with Mrs. Plaskett, ordered her out of the store. After resisting Mr. Tonieel's attempts to push her out of the bakery, Mrs. Plaskett claims that the proprietor hit her and kicked her in the stomach. Mrs. Plaskett received treatment at Harlem Hospital and later laid charges against Tonicci at the 135th street station. Tonicci was jailed for felonious assault.
