"The 369th Regiment Infantry Armory, at 143rd Street near Fifth Avenue, is one of two armories opened Tuesday as daytime shelters and recreation centers for homeless men... The other armory is that of the 244th Coast Defense Command at 125 West Fourteenth Street. The buildings will remain open all day, including Sundays. Not only will the homeless be protected from inclement weather, but they will be given hot coffee and doughnuts every morning, noon and night.... Commissioner Hodson said the Welfare Department expects to serve 3,500 men daily. The plan has been approved by Mayor LaGuardia and Comptroller Frank Taylor."
