Church authorities called a meeting to force the president of the Friendly Society, Samuel Skerritt, to appear and hand over the books of the Friendly Society two weeks after his resignation had been demanded. Skerritt did not attend, and in his absence, plans were made to combat the Skerritt's defiance. Rumours about the cause behind the rift were unconfirmed, with church authorities refusing to make any comment on the matter.
